Guest guest
I am right-handed and seemingly "right-legged." I first noticed some pain--although unusually not during practice but throughout the day--in the right knee. Of course this worried me, and I began to notice how I was losing awareness of opening the hips, especialy in poses using ardha padmasana and padmasana. By doing things like "hugging" my leg, and using the hip more in padmasana, instead of just hinging the knee up, I now experience no more pain, knock on wood.

But as for right side and left side, I am usually much tighter on my right side--hamstrings too--but I'm right-handed. Sometimes the imbalance between right and left sides is quite pronounced, but I suppose we humans will always be a bit asymmetrical.
Guest guest
I'm fairly new to Ashtanga and have recently experienced that pain on the outside of the leg, slightly below the knee that a few people have talked about. At one point it was quite bad and affected my walking! I discussed this with other practitioners with more experience and their advice was exactly the same that everyone had posted here - take it easy on the right side, focus on opening up the hip before attempting lotus etc.

Thankfully, my knee is much better now and I'm beginning to get back into the postures I couldn't just a few weeks ago. It was such a great comfort to see other people had overcome similar problems and to read such comprehensive advice.

And now we have the Right Knee Club!
sunandmike, I'm also right-handed, right-legged and tighter on entire right side! Do you think it's a good idea to do "remedial work" to stretch that side a little more or to just continue regular practise?
Guest guest
My right hip is soooooo stubborn and my right knee is the more vulnerable one and has sustained far more injuries and survived a surgery and a couple of scopes in it's lifetime. More lately I have noticed how my right hip is enormously more tight than my left hip. The difference is quite remarkable and I have been wondering about it. I have been very nice to my right hip, coaxing, gentle stretching, massages. Baddha Konasana can be tough on it too if I don't really pull it in and you know what I mean. This is all very interesting because I am right handed and right legged. Perhaps there is just more constriction on the right side from all the extra use it gets over the years. The same way runners get tight hips I suppose if you just use a joint more than another it is bound to be bound more tightly. Over any length of time, right or left side favoring would make an huge difference. EVer since I read these messages I have been paying attention to how much more I use my right side for everything - brushing my teeth, getting out of a car, getting on a bike etc. So I understand a little more about why my right hip and shoulder and even knee is bound more tightly. Is this true for anyone else?
