AUM atha yoganushasanam<br><br>AUM... Now, the

instruction of Yoga begins! (1) <br><br>Brahman-Atmananda

Purport:<br><br>Yoga means "oneness" from the root yuj "to yoke". Yoga

can mean the process through which oneness is

facilitated or the goal (irrevocable oneness with

Universality) itself. This goal of Yoga (Completeness) is also

the purpose of existence.<br><br>"Now" connotes an

auspicious time, the dawn of the awakening of consciousness

into life's true meaning and ultimate direction. Here

Rishi Patanjali (circa 200 BC) assumes the role of Guru

(gu "darkness" ru "that which dispells"), Illuminator

and weaves the first fiber of the sutra in the

disciples' consciousness.
