Guest guest
Don't run. It will make you stiff and give you too much muscle mass.

Diet: vegetarian. mostly raw foods. very light supper. low dairy, no wheat, no sugar (it makes you stiff)

Vinyasa. You can go as a beginner.

These are my opinions based on my experience over the years, but everybody is different.

spw
Guest guest
>Diet: vegetarian. mostly raw foods.
>very light supper. low dairy, no wheat,
>no sugar (it makes you stiff)

I would like to hear from more people on the subject of
diet. SPW’s advice is good and to the point. It has been
my experience that very few yoga teachers touch on this
subject... I guess they don’t want to come across as to pushy
in areas of the personal lives of students. I remember one
student asking a teacher about being a vegetarian on order
to practice yoga and got a vague answer. Along the same
lines was the time when a student asked the teacher what
religion she was.... questions that seem to throw some
yoga teachers for a loop.
I too was in a quandary about diet, flirting with being a
vegetarian off and on for years, not having any clear
conviction either way. Deep down I knew that my
practice would progress much better if I quit eating
BBQ pork sandwiches (it’s the local delicacy).
All this changed when I came into contact with
Sharon Gannon of Jivamukti, she outlined the
importance of diet in no uncertain terms likening
it to the first rung on the ladder (ahimsa).
In short she totally brainwashed me into not eating meat...
a condition that I am very grateful for.
After experimenting I have come to a diet similar to
what SPW outlines above and enjoy the benefits in
so many different ways. I would like to hear some
elaboration on the sugars-cause-stiffness claim.
Although I avoid sugar in general, I do eat lots of
local wild flower honey. I have found that eating
honey has eradicated my awful pollen allergies.
Now that I think about it stiffness in the morning
is very apparent in my body....
so I will quit the honey for a while and see if that changes. Guest guest
Not to monopolize this message board... someone said "don't change your diet, yoga will change it for you" which is great advise, I think, and true. Everybody is different, yes? But why add toxins to your body when you work so hard to flush it out? Years ago, after only two months of daily practice and lots of sweating and flushing, I gave away all the chicken and fish in my freezer because I couldn't stand the thought of eating it. Whatever. What are toxins? To some it is cooked honey, to some it is a bad relationship.
