Guest guest
Funky Badlady, I agree that people who teach a modified brand of ashtanga shouldn't call it ashtanga. But what precisely is Ashtanga-Yoga? Yes, already everybode here knows, Ashtanga are the 6 series that Krishnamacharya had found with the small student Pattabhi in the university of Kalkutta. - Just yesterday I read in a very nice book about the sun-salutations, about padangusthasana, about bandhas, about energy, chakras, about the "right" approach in practising the asanas with a special method of breathing; there was something about food, the both first steps of Ashtanga = Yama and Nyama - and much other things. Now I ask you: what book I've read? Was it a book for cooking or a book for yoga? It's easy to answer, I suppose. Second question (if I may): was it a book about Power-Yoga or Ashtanga-Yoga? I'm sure, even our Senor XY would not be able to answer this (may be HE could). I will not say the title, it's not important. It could be the book from Lino, David Swenson - or Beryl. All the time I'm hearing people talking about the difference. The one difference I see is not the method they're teaching. I regard Ashtanga-Yoga not so weak that if you omit one posture that the whole Ashtanga-system doesn't work. It works even then if you are only doing one asana, the sun-salutation! It works if you are doing only some postures - like David suggests in his short routins. The one difference is in my oppinion an other name for a better book-selling. But is this a bad thing? If people buy Beryl's book and practise the asanas with a correct breathing, they will work on the same thing like we all in this community do, call it Power-Yoga or Ashtanga. If the breathing is the same, the asanas are the same, the method seems the same, you can call it "the blue blue sky of heaven". - It is only my oppinion and I'm ready to learn if you can tell me the real difference.
