Guest guest
Hello all

OK- I'm mentally ready to commit to a proper chakrasana. I can do it no prob with a teacher, but maybe only 1 out of 10 times on my own, but usually at the expense of my neck. One teacher said its all about bandhas, not momentum which is the only way I can land it right. So what I'm trying to do now is stick my hands in front of my shoulders, lift my legs up over my head and press and think bandha, bandha, bandha and get nowhere- from there I usually lean on my left side and do a back roll via my left shoulder. Any thoughts appreciated, just keep in mind I do not have a teacher to practice with.

One other thing I want to add is that I tried the knee rag thing and it is fantastic.I'm just starting to be able to bind after what seems like a long time of dealing with my injured right knee and the rolled out rag helps to keep off pressure and I think is helping me protect it. Guy's advice to keep practicing was also valuable to me, especially coming from a teacher who has been there too.

gracias and thanks for all the great posts - you're my virtual class- just wish I could check out Pinchy in person....

s
Guest guest
Please keep in mind that I am not a teacher, but I have picked up a few things about chakrasana along the way. Once you can get a little momentum bringing your feet up and over your head, use your arm strength and press away from the floor. This should take the pressure off your neck. I've seen it demonstrated where the yogi sort of pops into a lovely chataranga by using arm strength, keeping legs strong, bandhas, bandhas, bandhas, and god knows what else, prayer.
Good luck, keep practising, and for shiva's sake watch your neck. Guest guest
Long time listener, first time caller-hi everybody. I had the exact same problem until a few weeks ago when I attended a workshop with a great local teacher (Brad Crews in Boston). The secret is-DON'T STOP BREATHING. I found that at the top of the roll the neck/fear thing kicked in and I lost the breath and the energy and ended up rolling over my left shoulder. Since I learned this I have had about a 95% success rate. So as always the solution is-breath and bandha.
Guest guest
Don't forget your legs. In addition to all the good chakrasana replies - I would recommend that you squeeze your two straight legs tightly together throughout the journey, this will support and uphold the often elusive bandhas and reduce the actual weight of the legs making them active and light. Guruji often instructs, in many poses, "tighten your hipstighten your legs".
Happy free-wheeling...m.p.
