Guest guest
My understanding is that Swenson's Advanced tape illustrates the advanced postures as he learned them over 20 years ago-- broken up into two series, Advanced A and B. Guruji later changed the organization of the postures, breaking up the Advanced A and B series into 3rd through 6th series.

If this is true, then Swenson's tape is probably not meant as a teaching aid, but as a document, to preserve the advanced postures the way they used to be taught. Assuming that's the case, Swenson is doing the Ashtanga world a huge favor by making the video. It will allow people in the future to see how Ashtanga has evolved.

Somebody please correct me if I'm misinformed about the Advanced A & B issue.

Also, Senor, I think that there are plenty of older Ashtangis out there who would take exception to your chracterization of Swenson as an "old timer." Isn't he only in his mid forties? I certainly hope to be practicing when I'm that age (in twenty years)!
Guest guest
Advanced A and B have been transformed to 3rd,4th and 5th. The 6th series is unknown all over the world, except to Sharath ,who is practicing it, and PK Jois who is teaching it to Sharath only.

BNS Iyengar, who is based in Mysore, was also a Krishnamacharya student and has the same claim to authenticity and respect as an Ashtanga Vinyasa "Guru"/teacher as PK Jois, and is around the same age as PK Jois, has always taught First, Second, Advanced A and B.
