Guest guest
I was at Borders and noticed the Bryan Kest Power Yoga series. anyone know if they are any good?
Guest guest
Don't by them.
They are absolutely no use for practise.
I bought the second one when I had just started with Ashtsanga Yoga. As there was very little information about Ashtanga available in Germany (it seems to get better) I tried to get everything I could get hold of.
But even only watching was no fun. You can see Brian leading a class doing a combination of postures that has nothing to do with one of the series. And last not least, the qualitiy of the recording is very bad (perhaps only in the PAL version).
Guest guest
I actually have to say that Mr. Kests video series is what got me started in my astanga path. Okay, crucify me now. Unlike many others who found their way to astanga through that yoga villian BBB's "Power Yoga" book. I found mine through his first two videos. At the time I had no understanding of what I was doing or that it was derived from a long standing tradition of properlyu sequenced asana. I just knew I felt good after doing them and they helped me recover from a pretty serious martial art injury involving my left knee.

I no longer use the videos and have found redemption in following the accurate sequencing of the primary series. But, I'm glad that I came across those tapes because through them I found astanga.

As for the quality, I'd say the first two on VHS were good, the third was pretty poorly done.

And as SPW points out, Mr. Kest no longer calls his yoga astanga and he does get a lot of chicks.

I do believe that at one time he studied with KPJ rathger extensively. I could be wrong here so don't take my word for it.

ishogun
Guest guest
I got into ashtanga after buying and doing the Ali McGraw video (I can feel the bullets whizzing towards me already). But then, she never said it was ashtanga and I still do it occasionally when I get bored, even though it's not that challenging. Why? Because, it is beautiful to look at and listen to... it has the highest production values of any exercise vid I've ever seen. I dearly love and respect Mr Swenson, but his vid is appallingly shot. And before I get arsey rants on how I don't know what I'm talking about - y'all may have the advantage on me when it comes to ashtanga, but I KNOW about direction and production.

Expecting eviction from this site any day now...
