Guest guest
My teacher told me, that you use 10 or even more counts to get used to the postures. Perhaps not in all postures but all standing and the therapeutic ones.
When you have established a well-based first series practise, you reduce the counts to five to create a more flowing and rythmic practise. If you keep on doing more breaths your mind tends to start wandering and you will not be able to feel the meditative aspect of the practise (as David Swenson says : "the inner and outer world is connected ...")

(As I'm still practising only surya namaskar A for two hours each day :-) this is only second hand advice)
