Guest guest
Could anyone recommend a retreat/resort/spa that offers daily astanga but also offers fitness activities for a companion who does not practice (and does not want to)? Someplace warm in November, and not too far from Northeast USA, like Carribbean, Central America, even California?

I have looked at Pura Vida in Costa Rica, they have Wayne Krassner in December, but the timing doesn't work. Any suggestions?
Guest guest
bandawoman -

You might give Rancho La Puerta in Tecate, Mexico, near sunny San Diego some thought. They have a whole smorgasbord of fitness activities. Tim Miller is there this week teaching daily classes, although the format is short. You could combine a delightful stay there with a few days in San Diego attending some of the different classes at his studio in Encinitas, too.

http://www.rancholapuerta.com/About/index.html
http://www.ashtangayogacenter.com/

good luck-
laproxdoc
Guest guest
There's the Expanding Light in Nevada City, CA. They have daily yoga, meditation, vegetarian meals, etc., but their version of Ashtanga is to sit around and talk about the eight limbs after some basic hatha yoga. Isn't Yoga Journal's annual teacher directory coming out soon? They always list retreats in the back, maybe there'd be something for you there.
A spa or resort offering daily Ashtanga classes would be a rare beast. Good luck. Guest guest
Hello Bandawoman

A thought for you

Dennis Dean is giving a 7 day yoga retreat in Yalapa near Puerto Vallarta Nov 4 -11. I've known some people who've gone and they say its fantastic- his full program sounds so fun and seems like there is hiking, horseback riding and jungle fun. Guest guest
I believe the Lodge at Skylonda in Northern California has astanga classes as well as a host of other fitness activities.

http://www.skylondalodge.com

ishogun

Guest guest
I didn't say I approved. I just offered info from my own search for the same. I think it must be those wealthy San Francisco Astangis that go there and hang out.

Ishogun
Guest guest
i would agree with laprox that a trip to so cal would be a great idea. great weather in the fall. spend a few days in encinitas, still a fairly simple surf town, with Tim Miller's Ashtanga Yoga Center, http://www.ashtangayogacenter.com/
just a few blocks from the beach. if you're truely looking for a spa experience, The Golden Door in San Marcos (N. SD county) (http://www.thegoldendoor.com/) is a renowned lux spa, you need to commit to stay for at least 1 wk. i don't know if they include any kind of yoga in their fitness programs, if they do i doubt it'a ashtanga. you could still drive over to encinitas though.
then,if you want, you could slip up to LA and see some shows, do LA stuff (whatever that is) and drop in to Noah Williams and Kimberly Flynn's Ahimsa Yoga (http://www.ashtangayogashala.com/) and Yoga Works with Chuck Miller and Maty Ezraty. you will get to see some great places and do your yoga with some of the best teachers in the western US
