last post, i promise. i was talking to some one

about guruji and the diet yogi's eat. i wondered how he

could seem so heavy with that kind of diet. they told

me that many yogis that do pranayama develop, over

time, thickened abdominal girth. she mentioned the

photos of BKS iyengar in "Light on Yoga" as a second

example. does anyone know much about this? how would doing

pranayama lead to increased weight gain? i could understand

hypertrophy of the abdominal musculature, but not fatty

weight gain.

Looking @ the abs of the elderly, being big yogis

or laymen, is not a gazing point for a case study of

the life long effects of pranayama. As I'm sure

you're aware, weight gain is a function of caloric

intake/output. If you want to examine the long term benefits of

pranayama, I suggest you start with the nervous system.

Needless to say, it would be a very complicated

undertaking as western medicine has yet to map all the

nadis.

Yours in yoga

I was told many years ago...that the big tummies

you see on yogis are indeed from pranayama. It has to

do with where the khumbhaka sp? (breath retention)

is held. Longer inner retention results in the more

concave tummy whereas the longer outer results in the big

tummy. It can be quite deceiving looking as their

stomaches are incredibly strong. I would expect that some

of that extra weight is due to age.
Keep in mind

though, that a perfect physique is not the final goal.

just wanted to add...that I was also told that

everyone has a natural predisposition to one or the other.

Judging from my shape I'm an outie. But thankfully

primary series is taking me so long it looks like

pranayama practice is a long ways away :)

i would be very surprised if there is anyone

visible in the west who has done more pranayama practice

than clive sheridan. if you want to know about

pranayama, look no further than him. goa in march, rishikesh

in december?? with his aghori baba or teaching other

places outside india other times. he is skinny as can

be.
