practicing outside

No scholar I, but I would guess that it has

something to do with the flora and fauna of premodern

India. I believe most yogis were forest hermits, and

living in isolation in the Indian jungle would lead to

encounters with an impressive bestiary. Snakes and tigers

and bugs, oh my! (I wonder if a yogi would taste

especially good to a gourmet tiger?) The elements might have

been a factor too; at least during monsoon season

practicing outside wouldn't be wise.

Well, since the only flora and fauna I encounter

on my verboten roofdeck are flowers, tomato and

basil plants, bumble bees, lady bugs, and the

occasional tomato-filching squirrel, I guess I'll continue

to enjoy my outdoor practice while the weather's

still good. (Hurricane season in Massachusetts ain't

nothing like monsoon season in India!)

Hey,

okrgr1, maybe I can grow you some of that special grass

on the roof so you don't have to go the razor route.

We've already got some zebra grass goin' on up there!

I am guessing that the prohibition against

practicing outside has to do with the fact that outside

practice makes it more difficult to keep one's internal

heat on high.

Which leads me to another

question. How many of you practice in a place where the

heat is turned on? Thats what I dislike about

practicing at home is the lack of high heat. And anybody

experience being more flexible at Jois' house than at home,

even though the yoga studio where I go is a the heat

is turned up for Ashtanga?
