Guest guest
Oops, sorry godfrey, i was getting ahead of myself (or rather, i was referring to some notes I had written when i was reading too many different things at the same time).

godfrey did make the association between the five elements and the different facets of practice (asana, pranayama, bandha, drsti, vinyasa). At the time i read that, i was also reading something in rudi ballentine's book _radical_healing_, and so made the five element-five vayu connection (there is also a fun element-chakra connection to be made).

I tend to think of the five pranas (or the five vayus) as describing different functions within the body (in the same way that chinese medicine can identify an organ called the "triple warmer" in spite of the fact that no physical organ exists -- in fact, the chinese triple warmer could almost be thought of as analogous to the functions of prana vayu, samana vayu, and apana vayu). In other words, what the five vayu "are" is not so much a material thing, as much as a set of functional relationships.

But, lest anyone think i'm taking myself too seriously -- i enjoy practicing outside on occasion too. Although usually it's more in the nature of "playing" than hardcore "practice".
