Guest guest
I am worried about you. You once said you have a wife and kids, but you have a job which you obviously don't like, and don't do much work at. What will happen to the family if they chuck you out for spending all day on the net?

You're obviously a nice guy, with ideas, wit and a lot to say. In fact, so much to say, that it gives those of us who are looking for gold a hell of a lot of sludge - albeit entertaining sludge - to sift through before we find it. In fact, because I have to spend an hour or so a day (HAVE to?) reading messages at work just to keep up, I'll probably end up losing my job too!!

So please, everybody, nice as you are and entertaining as it is to observe the cut and thrust (and in El Senor's case) the kill of vigorous debate, remember each time you post that your message will occupy the time of hundreds of others.

Question: What sort of stuff belongs in the chat room, and what should take the form of postings?

Cheers

Dave
Guest guest
John,

Please, there is no need to apologize. However, maybe you should get IM.

Dave, why do you pick on John? I'm obviously as guilty.

I would like to turn this around and say that it's amazing that in this online club we feel we are relating to one another and communicating personally. I feel like I know many of you. It would be a shame to start censoring friendly messages. Or caustic messages. The comic relief is so welcome in a club that could easily become drab, monotonous, stagnant, and overly serious. I know it's a pain to sift through any apparant BS, but like John said we are not all able to chat at the same time.

We all have to sift through sludge--that's life, and that IS how real gold is found. I personally don't want to hear about Hindu philosophy here every day. This club would become defunct if we restricted ourselves to asking only for asana tips or questions on how to practice the moral observances, or what to eat to be a good yogi. What kinds of postings would you like to see? Post some of your own questions. Or read some of the several thousand past messages--there is helpful info there.

Ashtanga="99% practice, 1% theory."
Guest guest
I agree with Sunshine. However, I would not refer to what we have to sift through as BS, but cow dung! That way it's all relevant.

(Though I for one would like to hear a bit more about philosophy. And more good things to read about yoga in general, beyond Astanga practice manuals. For me, practice is probably more than 99%, I just do it because I love it and it feels great on many levels. I don't know too much about it. So perhaps I need to work on bringing the theory part up to 1%.)

Keep it up, stiffy mother john. I have come to think of you as the MC of this far-flung group. Like Jay Leno, or Carson, depending on your age or preference. Wish I could take you up on that dinner invite, but we will be just passing through.

This may be a stupid question: what is the difference between this forum and a chat board? Guest guest
bandawoman, I suppose the difference is a chat board is live; you talk with people who are online at the same time. With the clubs and forums you can post a message anytime and answer anytime.

Yeah I like stiffy mother John the bobbing ashtangi surfer wannabe. An MC is a great description. Always mediating, initiating subjects, reeling us back to the core topics, and being funny. We love you okrgr1 (and where is that handle from anyway)???

Let's continue to have fun while we discuss the intricacies of yoga theory and sanskrit inflections, OK? I had a real ego-blasting day today--a toughie and I cried a bit--so I need some comic relief now more than ever.
Guest guest
many things--not about yoga.
sun, sorry your day went south. time heals most things. for another annoying platitude, hows this: we wouldn't be able to appreciate our good days without the perspective of some bad as well. kind of like SD weather, it's not really life if it's 'blue skies' all the time.
message boards--it's not just me? i find this system to be surprisingly clunky. you can't search for posts by a given author, day or topic (looking up all those SPW posts took a whole lunchtime.) also, sometimes, when i'm trolling around looking at older messages, when i hit the 'message list' link i get sent to the first 50 messages, back in 1998 or whenever it was. lately i've had a couple of episodes where i could read all but the most recent post. if i tried to click on that i would get sent back to messages 1-50 as well. needs some adjustment to meet the customers' needs if you ask me.
Instant messenger--we actually had loaded that on our home machine a while back. the perky IM boxes that would pop up at start up and demand that something or another be done were irritating enough but not too long after that we had all kind of system crashes, loss of dsl access and other e-dominoes falling. i doubt there was any linkage with IM but pavlovian reflexes run deep so i've been reluctant to re-install it at home. besides, no one ever wanted to talk to me using it before. sniff. a lot of the time i connect at work where we can't load stuff anyway.
moniker--way back in the dark ages--back when i had a mac and aol was the distant third of the internet access companies, when i signed up on my aol account they recommended a sign on name that was something i could remember but that someone else was unlikely to come up with--so OK is for oklahoma and RGR is the abbreviation for a unit i was in when i was in the army decades ago. the 1? well, i apparently tried to sign on with a long time ago and got a password which i susequently forgot. when i later tried to sign on again, i was told OKRGR was in use and to pick another name--so, OKRGR1.
wonderful comments--thanks all. he does have a valid point though. there's probably not a place here for posting just for postings sake. one of my mom's homilies: if it doesn't need to be said, don't say it. it's pretty easy to cross the line from contributing to typing just to hear myself type. so i've resolved to do better--so far only 4 posts today and only two about yoga. i trainable, no?
