i'd never read a book about mountains or climbing

until i went thru Into Thin Air in '96. now i've got a

library of probably 50-60 books. it's amazing that there

are so many good writers who climb, or maybe climbers

who write well. so many sagas, K2 in '38, K2 in the

'90's, everest, mckinley.. it is for me quite an

interesting field... to read about. i might fantasize about

what kind of climber i might be, but i cannot accept

the risk.<br>i read beck weather's book about the '96

climb. while he is most compelling on the mountain,

surviving despite being essentially left for dead twice by

his fellow climbers, his description of his pre-climb

self is most telling. he put everything and everyone,

his kids, his wife, everything, behind his

monomaniacal desire to summit peaks. his cuts himself no

slack. it is a good counterpoint to Into Thin Air and a

caution to those who would pursue something to any

extreme--the cost is greater than the prize

I realize this is a yoga list but okrgr1, if you haven't read Joe Simpson's

"Touching the Void" you are in for a treat. I almost read the whole thing

through in one sitting, it is so compelling.
