Guest guest
Just wanted to give my moral support about vinyasas- I'm in that "in between" group. I'm past the rolling over the knees, but can't quite fully lift and gracefully swing the legs back.

My theory is that all you out there who feel you are "stuck" in the roll-over stage, you really aren't. Granted, the roll-over stage is necessary to develop the arm muscles a bit (noodle arms can't lift). But, if you can even a bit lift yourself up with legs crossed (say, after each nivasana), then you can start practicing the jump back.

I first lift with the bandas, then start to tip over so that my face moves toward the mat, throw my legs back and move into chatarunga. Sometimes I am graceful and the movement feels easy. Sometimes I engage in that well-known "shuffle" of the toes backward. Some days I can jump back and jump through with grace and ease. Other days I'm a shuffling mess. On some occasions I alternate with rolling over the knees. The point is that I DON'T GIVE UP. I do vinyasa in between each side and in between each pose. I try to have "integrity" with the vinyasa, rather than just shufflnig through all the time out of laziness, or jumping through only to have my butt slam on the ground.

I am absolutely positive that if I keep sincerely trying (even the past two weeks working throughlower back pain), then tomorrow I'll get it "perfectly"- even if that tomorrow happens a year from now.

So, please try to give it your all each day- no matter how tired you are. It will come.

Gee, maybe I should think about employing this philosophy to rest of my life....

Oh, and skinnda, I made the mistake of reading through more than the 500 messages I missed while away from the board for 2 1/2 weeks. I am soooo addicted. But, hey, it was a perfect procrastination technique.

Gabita
Guest guest
gabita, thanks for the encouragement. i'm still plugging away. i've been trying to lift my butt off the floor with each vinyasa to build the shoulder strength. i don't think i'm close to the strength i need to be able to lean forward and extend back. i haven't even tried to extend back yet. this is one of the things that i do look around in class for. if i'm near an accomplished practicioner, i try and watch as best i can. it happens so quickly though. which did you find came first--jumping through from down dog or jumping back into chaturanga?
i've noticed an interesting side effect from all those tolasanas or what ever holding the take-it-up would be called. i find it more difficult to do a good virabhadrasana A and utkatasana, also seem stiffer and less able to get my arms as far in prasarita C.
