Guest guest
Goodmorning!

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Okrg1, thanks for the info about the Yoga Centre. I found out about it at the same time I found out about this club. I will have to check out a class. I work most evenings, and wouldn't be able to attend regularly, but it appears they have a drop in class for absolute beginners. I might be able to start there, and see if I can find a way to sometimes go when I have an evening off.

SunandMike, it's nice to know others have struggled with that same inconsistency and became more consistent. There's hope for me. I tried to do the postures everyday for awhile, and just didn't have the physical strength, strength of focus, or strength of discipline. One of my favourite spiritual teachers has a saying, "Start where you are." So, I have tried to be more flexible with myself, and have found my rhythm to be every other day. In fact, when I'm in a good groove, 4 times per week. Once I get that habituated, I'm hoping to add a day until I'm up to 5 ot 6 times per week. I have found that when I try to be further than I really am (with anything), I don't succeed in reaching a goal. In fact, I think I have become aware of my tendencies related to this through yoga.

Gheranda, I have never regretted doing the postures afterward either, and often regret not doing them. It's nice to hear similar experience. Here's to not only a stronger, more flexible body, but stronger more flexible self-discipline!

Bandawoman, thanks for the info on how to post. I can't fathom how I missed it.

As I previously mentioned, I became introduced and am learning through Birch's Power Yoga Book. I noticed in one of the postings that this book is controversial. I find it to be extremely well written, especially related to explaining how to achieve each posture. At the same time, I have nothing to compare it to. I would definitely be open to your feedback on this (or would welcome related previous message numbers).

Also, I don't have a TV or VCR (nor do I want one). However, I do have a DVD on my PC. Anyone know if the postures are available (or soon to be available) on DVD?
Guest guest
laura,
in regards to controversy over the book "Power Yoga", the controversy is maybe more accurately a tempest in a teapot. quite a few people have posted here how helpful the book was in getting them started on the path to standard ashtanga practice. but there are some here who feel that any variation from pure ashtanga is an intolerable abomination. in reviewing that person(s) post about beryl and her husband, it seems that there is also a personal grudge. from the tone of some of those posts, one easily gets the sense of a desire to do harm, despite professed claims to a purer, more regal yoga practice. most who have commented here have noted the positive contributions her book makes while noting that she admits to teaching a method that is similar to but different than ashtanga. if you haven't had the chance to review those other comments that felt the opposite about her, just wait a bit, they will no doubt be forthcoming. to everything, there is a yin and a yang. fortunately, we all have our own minds to use. Guest guest
<<I'm hoping to add a day >>
you've got a good head on. do what you can do. if you get the chance, commit to a week-long workshop or retreat or whatever they may be called in your area. doing so changed my approach a lot. i formerly practiced intermittently, 2-4x/wk, usually the health club type classes with the occasional foray into the real deal at tim miller's place. after the workshop, going to the health club classes was inadequate. the instructors were all great but there was not the physical challenge and i wanted to do more. now, i go to those classes only if the gods and the schedule at tim's place are against me. by now going most days and by doing the full first series, the advancements i have made, in the asanas at least, are significant.

one other piece of unsolicited advice... i used to worry that i was not ready for or shouldn't go to a workshop or to the first series or mysore classes because i was new to this and a raw beginner. don't let that kind of non-logic get in your way.

as for dvd's, haven't seen any of that. there is a cd that you can practice to though--available thru wayne krassner's site. i've never heard it, so don't know much to tell you.
http://www.ecstaticyoga.com/
that may better than trying to watch a video while in downdog or backbending.

as for books, if you don't have david swenson's book, i would get it
http://www.ashtanga.net/.
also, get guruji's book yoga mala, available from a variety of places such as jivamukti
http://www.jivamuktiyoga.com/boutique/index.html
i'd love to get the book and video by lino miele but never seem to get organized to write him for them--probably because i'm doodling away so much time here
