Guest guest
Monkeymind,

I too have poor posture. I became aware of it around ten years ago, and it seems that nothing has helped. If I'm not directly focused on pulling my hips in, head up and shoulders back, I slouch terribly. The wrong muscles are overdeveloped and the right ones underdeveloped (for proper posture). I've been secretly hoping that yoga would help with this, along with the head work in addressing the reasons I began slouching in the first place. It's great to hear there's hope. I've noticed a slight change, but with my inconsistent practice, nothing major.

Anyone else out there have improved general posture from the practice? Guest guest
Yoga does help with this. It corrects the structural misalignments caused by poor postural and movement habits and makes you aware of how it feels to be more properly aligned (and it will delve into the reasons you began slouching in the first place). And being mindful of these principles off the matt will help retrain the habits that cause the problems.

You might benefit from taking a few lessons in the Alexander Technique. It helped me to become more conscious of my everyday postural and movement habits and to improve them. Just a handful of lessons can do an amazing amount of good. Check out the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique website for more info about the technique and to find a teacher:

http://www.stat.org.uk/
