Guest guest Posted November 2, 2000 Report Share Posted November 2, 2000 Some definitions are in order: <br>These terms define relative direction from a defined point of origin which anatomically speaking, is basically the center of the body<br>Distal(far from) versus Proximal(close to)<br>Medial(toward middle, inside) versus Lateral (toward outside, away from middle).<br><br>So distal means away from the middle of the body or away from a point of origin - as in your fingers are distal to your arm, your wrist is more proximal to your arm than your fingers. <br><br>The medial knee is the INSIDE of the knee whereas the lateral knee is the OUTSIDE of the knee.
