Guest guest
I am going to be visiting Boston over the Thanksgiving weekend - does anyone have recommendations for good classes/Mysore in the area? Thanks!
Guest guest
Hi emstreet:

First I'd recommend looking at the Boston Astanga yogis club on . There have been some class schedules posted lately, a new teacher in Jamaica Plain, for example, but I have not taken her classes so I can't recommend her myself (a trusted friend likes her class).
Second, since it is a holiday weekend, I'd emphasize that you need to double check everywhere whether classes will be held or not. So here's a limited roster of Boston Astanga over the weekend.
Friday 7:30 am: Mysore by Jarvis, The Yoga Studio on Joy Street
Friday noon: Power Yoga by Marc (is usually an Astanga class, but only 1hr 15 min), Metropolitan Health Club Columbus Avenue
Sat. am: Astanga Fundamentals by Jarvis, Metropolitan
Sunday 7 am: Mysore by Cary, Baptiste Power Yoga Studio, Mass Ave, Cambridge. This is a new class and I really enjoyed it yesterday, only it's second time offered. Quite small (4, including BB) since no one knows about it yet. Cary is a student of Tim Miller and I have probably misspelled her name.
Sunday 10:30: Led Astanga by Marc, Mike's Gym, Washington Street (I think)

Again, it's all I can draw off the top of my head, but toss the query to the Boston club and you may get more alternaitves. Guest guest
Great roster, bandawoman! I was intrigued by Cary's class at Power yoga- particularly because she and her partner practice with a small group in my apartment during the week when they can, and she has a beautiful practice as well as a fun "California" energy (said from a hardnosed New Englander perspective!). But to be honest, I couldn't muster the energy for a 7am Sunday practice (I like to start later on Sundays- lazy lazy).

In any case, don't forget that Saturday is a new moon, so people may be taking either Friday or Sunday off as well as the usual Saturday rest day. So, yes, do check before popping into a class.

cuidense,
G
Guest guest
I can't remember the schedule of Sharon's classes at the Kukurulla center, do you? I would have added those for emstreet.

What time do you practice?

BTW, the mighty Cassandra has made her appearance on my profile. Rest assured, I have no doubts of Paco's ferocity, since Cassandra has a little dog body and a big dog brain.
Guest guest
Bandawoman:
Thank you so much for your list! That's great that Metropolitan now has Astanga classes - I used to go there 6 years ago when I lived in Boston, but they didn't have yoga there back then. I will definitely try out the classes you listed. Last time I was in Boston I tried Baptiste yoga but found it oppressively hot and kind of a weird combination of different yoga styles. But a Mysore class seems more appealing, especially a small one. Thanks again for the recommendations!
Guest guest
You're quite welcome, emstreet.
I don't know if you know Alberto at the Met but he is quite supportive of Astanga there (it's where I had my first exposure to it) and he even practices at home to David Swenson's tape. I also hear he will be bringing Kathy McNames down from Yoga Vermont for a workshop, in January I think, and she is a wonderful teacher with a beautiful practice and spirit.
The Astanga offerings here have lately blossomed. Maybe all my pleas on this board for more teachers in Boston have been heard. More is happening, a new studio in Somerville come the new year, there's someone teaching Tues and Thurs pm at the Boston Center for the Arts on Tremont (if you know the Met you probably know the South End) and more classes at other gyms (Boston Sports Club).
The heat at Baron's is definitely extreme, but at 7 am the room has not yet reached sauna level, so it was fine. Sorry I won't be around to join you in practice; I'll be off for my own "Tofurkey" day. B
