Guest guest
I do not know anyone who has some degree of masttery in Ashtanga who has not worked "hard". I could tell you stories about all the senior students learning at diferent levels and how they had to focus and sweat through certain postures more than others. As a gross generality, the leaner ones were more able to move through the flexibilty postures (due to less mass in the way) and the yogis with more muscle were able to handle the handstand and up on the arms with more ease if you could call it that.

Reading observations of the advanced postures through on this site, I've noticed some believe that working through advanced in all about flexibility. In my case, this was not so. It took tremendous concentration with focus on the breath and bandhas then flexibility would come. How bad do you want it (kama)? Your desire will drive you if that is what you want. However, I know that it is not necessary to do the advanced series to become a big yogi. A person could master the beginning series, then slowly move through intermediate and learn pranayama and be set for life with a great practice. Best of luck!

Yours in yoga,
Guest guest
Thanks takitup. Say, I have noticed over the last 5 years of practice that its my darn knees that I worry about mostly - having tweaked them slightly in the early days of my ashtanga practice.
Next year I go to Tim Miller's place for 2 weeks in the spring to train. I imagine he will adjust me into those poses I can't get completely to adjust my hips so my knees won't take it all on. It's like I am ready for bigger adjustements (eg: seated ardha baddha) to get over my fear of knees popping out.
namaste takeitup
Guest guest
Tim does great adjustments - be sure to talk to him a bit before your first class so he has a "heads up" about your knee issues. He knows how to compensate for stiffness and tenderness because of vast experience. He can take you and your practice beyond where you've been before!
