Guest guest
<<But does that mean it is more appropriate to never do anything - it is so goooood to stretch before class.>>

great question. i've been wondering for sometime now about what we do vs what we should do.

when my wife was having problems with her hamstring, one of our favorite instructors told her that the stretching she was doing before class was not likely to be helpful and could actually be making her pain worse. he recommended NOT stretching at all before class. and not just my wife, he meant anyone.
his point was that to stretch without being warm and supple is to invite tearing, strain and injury. one of the most important points of the practice is to generate internal heat to allow a safer, more effective stretching of the limbs and joints. he recommended just doing the practice and not doing any pre-practice stretching.

now, just about everyone i have ever seen does some warm up, myself included. all those hip opening things, ham stretching things--one day this real gumby-type lady next to me was doing tittibasana B to "warm up". i thought that was a bit much, but maybe it really was stretching and not posturing.

at any rate, should we stretch at all before we practice?
