Sunshine, you have done something no-one has ever

managed to do in my lifetime...

I'm assuming

porter is an alcoholic drink... but I don't know what it

is. And worse still, I HAVEN'T DRUNK IT.

My

reputation is in tatters.

Yours in shame, LouLou.

as long as we are getting enlightened, why is

stout called stout?

when i was a medical

student, we had some med students from ireland stay with

us for a few months. we were talking about some of

the differences in post operative care between there

and here. here, after surgery, it is common to

gradually advance a diet--from sips of water to a diet of

clear liquids, then a soft diet--tapioca, etc., then

finally solid food.
there, the intermediate step

between clear liquids and solid food was stout! i thought

at the time they we having me on but others have

since told me the same thing. so, if you're gonna have

abdominal surgery, get it in great britain--although i've

heard that with their form of socialized medicine, you

may be on the waiting list for quite a while

Hey that's a great story. Actually, laugh as you

will, but beer, especially dark beer (and NOT swill

like Bud, et al) has nutrients. Trappist monks would

fast for 40 days and 40 nights on beer alone!

Basically, beer is liquid bread with an added bonus of B

vitamins.

Stout, which actually came after porter, probably got

its name from its description. I am guessing here,

but because "stout" means bulky, strong, thick, bold,

solid, and substantial...well, you get the picture!
