Guest guest
yogidiva, welcome to the crowd. i practiced when i could early on, but given my prioritization at the time, that meant i was going 2-3x/week. a few months after starting up, i took the 2 wk seminar given by guruji here on the west coast. since it was a "once in a lifetime" event, i took mornings off from work and had my mom get the kids to school to ensure that i could go each day. i found that after doing the practice each day, i was no longer satisfied or challenged by the occasional attendance that i had previously accepted. so, i changed priorities. family and work still rule the time allocation, but i try to get to every yoga class i can. now i'm closer to 4-5x/wk, some weeks going 6x. i'm not disciplined enough (yet) to do my practice at work or early in the AM on my own. maybe that will be my next stage of commitment. i can tell you this, when you practice consistently, you will progress much more. it is an investment in time that you will not regret.

as for AM vs PM, i think that's a matter of personal preference. for me, i go when i can. if that means an early AM class one day and an evening class the next day, then i do that. it's probably more ideal to do them all at approx the same time but i don't live in that perfect world. some people have noted here that they are more stiff when they try to practice first thing in the AM. i think that is correctable, just get up an extra 45 minutes earlier (helps to go to bed an hour earlier--priorities) and get moving around, take a shower, etc. if you just roll out of bed, into the car and onto your mat in a span of 15 minutes, you will likely feel pretty stiff. if you like AM practice, give yourself the time to get your body going--your practice will benefit
Guest guest
I've been practicing daily for a little over a year now, after a couple of years of more sporadic practice. I'm finding a huge difference in the effects. I've had long periods (weeks, months) of feeling more content and at peace with myself than ever before in my life.

My eating & drinking habits seem to be becoming much healthier too, without any conscious effort or strain - I just seem to be gradually ceasing to want harmful things. I'm not completely vegetarian (yet?) - still eat a fair amount of fish, and will very occasionally eat meat if for example, I'm away from home and somebody (e.g.my mum or my sister) has made an effort to cook it for me. But in general I'm certainly becoming much more conscious and careful about what I'm prepared to consume. Still enjoy a couple of beers with friends at the weekend, but find the idea of getting drunk utterly abhorrent. All this isn't the result of conscious decisions on my part, it just seems to be happening as a side effect of regular practice.

I usually practice in the early evening as soon as I get home from work. I've made a couple of feeble attempts to switch to morning practice, but with no success yet.
Guest guest
Eating fish once or twice a week is healthy because of the omega-3 fatty acids it contains. A vegetarian on vegan diet is morally superior but not necessarily the healthiest choice.
Guest guest
No true about omega-3's. Flax seed oil has it all. Also not true about moral superiority. Diet is a health issue, not a moral issue. Some may disagree and start the ahimsa discussion again.
T.
Guest guest
"Eating fish once or twice a week is healthy because of the omega-3 fatty acids it contains."

I do agree that certain fish are high in essential fatty acids, but one can always put a spoonful of flaxseed oil on their morning cereal to get those fats. Believe me, I'm way into getting my essential fats. I love my flaxseed oil- helps the skin, hair, membranes, etc. and you'll naturally start to lose weight by sloughing off the "unnecessary" fats your body has stored because it freaked out that you didn't have enough halthy fats in your diet. Big fan over here.
Guest guest
Thanks for responding. It's a funny thing, the old "Just do it." AM is definitely stiffer than PM, though it helps to keep the heater on and windows closed, and in a way it can feel more magical, I think, like, being newly awake and watching the sun come up while doing these amazing asanas. Thank you for welcoming me.
Guest guest
another fan of the mighty flax here! It's great drizzled on grains and veggies and potatoes. Oh, and another way of eating flax, esp if you like whole foods, is to grind the seeds in a coffee grinder with some roasted sesame seeds--this garnish is soooo delicious!
