Guest guest
i dont know for sure - I guess everyone has different experiences.

According to the Yoga scheme of life, there are 3 types of energy: Tamas (heaviness, inertia), Rajas (movement, disturbanance) and Sattva (purity/tranquility)

These energies pervade the entireity of creation - they qualify a persons feelings/behaviour/thoughts and the food we eat.

different foods have different qualities - and effect the person eating them accordingly (though some foods have different effects on different people)

When you practice yoga, you start to purify your body, overcoming the tendencies to inertia and hyperactivity - finding a balanced and tranquil effect. We have all experienced that.

If your addiction is a packet of Marlboro or a gallon of ice cream, the one time you are least likely to desire it is immediately after your practice when you bask in a glow of satisfaction and contentment. Let's face it - we all know that addictions (strong cravings) are a desire for something we lack (not the actual substance desired).

The more you practice, the more sattvic you become, and the healthier and happier you become, hence there is less craving for something you lack.

After practice your body and mind feels subtley more alive and refined. If you were to binge you would immediately feel the negative effects on your body/mind as you now have a heightened awareness of what it could mean to be truly healthy.

In the beginning, it is possible that you feel more tired or lethargic or more hypped up after practice. the former is often due to detoxification process which flushes out all those unwanted substances into your blood stream. The latter is often due to incorrect practice and in particular not taking long enough rest at the end of practice.

Ashtanga Yoga is a thoroughly healing practice - if you devote yourself to it - incredible things will change in your life and in your state of health. When your body and mind are healthy they do not crave unhealthy habits - maybe its a case of like attracting like.

Changes happen over a period of time - they are not immediate.
