Guest guest
Inga, I'd love to take you up on the secret tips.

We tried to find some bubbling hot water holes to dip into after a long day, but we could not and we figure the Icelanders keep the Yankee tourists away, hiding them for themselves. Also did not spot one puffin, though we were swarmed by a flock of terns and other sea fowl in a scene reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" while exploring the Snaefelllness penninsula near Olafsvik. But then again we did not go the Islands or those bird havens in the Northwest Fjords.

But I have to return; I never got to try out the distinct gait of the beautiful Icelandic horse, though I am on the verge of believing that riding horses is unkind (it's that ahimsa thing again...).

Sunshine, you should go, you'd love it. There are fabulous camgrounds all over, and they were never full, and I was there in high season. The supermarkets sell great bread (full of flax seeds) and of course, fine smoked salmon (if you eat it) is really cheap! Restaurants can be expensive, and if you don't eat seafood or dairy it's difficult to get good veggies outside of Reykjavik, but you can do it on a budget.

Also, remember, if you go in summer, the days are so long it's as if you get two days for the price of one! You can gaze at waterfalls or hike glaciers beyond midnight. So if you don't need a lot of sleep, it's perfect, you can pack in a lot during one day.

Let me know if you do plan to go, I'll give you some pointers (but Inga's will be better).
B
