Guest guest
Can anyone give me any pointers on how you learned to get up into a headstand? I can do it against a wall (I was DEATHLY afraid of being upside down, so the wall offered me some solace in knowing that I wouldn't fall over and die!), but I think I'm comfortable enough being upside down that I can do it on the floor now. Maybe. Just wanted to know if you had any input...Thanks!

Lauren
Guest guest
Hi Lauren, Iyengar-people (my wife...) are learning headstand against a wall. I am against tools, in my oppinion our body has to do the asanas without tools himself (even a teacher seems for me as a tool). So I was glad to show my wife David Swenson's book in which he says, do the headstand without a wall! The explanation is (I think), that then you are going cautionary only step by step upward, and in this time your body will build up the muscles and the power you need for going in a right headstand at the end. In the first times you will fall down, it will be a shock and you will be amazed that you are still alive, but you will not die (if there is not a table or a cat or something like that right in the way). I mean even Beryl (sorry...) says: learn falling. - (What is falling? It is your fear, you don't know what will happen; if there is enough place to fall down, fall down and try to welcome this experience.

- But: what about handstand - oh..oh..
