Guest guest
laughing in class is naughty! I got the giggles my first class with Hamish (mainly cos my mate Tich was doing a hilarious sun salutation a - one where hands touchng the floor was a very distant possibility - we hadn't yoga'd for six weeks and boy did it show). Anyway, I actually had to stuff my hair in my mouth, which screwed the breathing and lovely Hamish just kept looking at me with CONCERN. I felt like a care in the community case.

Now, on competitiveness - in my class (mysore self practise, therefore guilt free) after some of the, ahem, better students finish, they sit at the back chatting away and blatently commenting on the more crap students. I think this is very rude, and would take great offence and smack them if it wasn't for the fact that a) violence isn't very yoga and b) they're a bunch of arses and therefore not worth my concern. But it's dead offputting when your lying in relaxation, trying to summon up the goddess of love, beauty and happiness so she can flood your body with wellbeing and a nice bright blue colour (don't lie, I know you all secretly do this) and then u get distracted by a load of idle chat.

Wotcha fink? Should I just smack 'em?
Guest guest
>> Wotcha fink? Should I just smack 'em?
Yep. I should have smacked the two in NY who were chatting on the next mat to me after they had "relaxed" for about 30 seconds.

Well, maybe you should give them some verbal first, *then* smack them. Either way, the intended result is that they stop doing it. Therefore you don't continue to think anti-ahimsic thoughts about them, which is just as bad for you as doing anti-ahimsic deeds. Furthermore, they stop piling up karma for behaving rudely so you're doing them a favour too and everybody is better off. Go for it.

But seriously (?) - laughing in class = good. Rudeness and lack of consideration for others in class = bad, and I'm surprised a teacher of Hamish's reputation would tolerate it.

You wouldn't be able to hear them if you had Leftield turned up loud enough. Guest guest
(from a 3 month old newbie) sometimes i chuckle out loud...lose contact with my breath...but always at myself. the teacher reminds me/the class each time i do this that i lost my focus and breath...but it IS funny that i should even attempt certain things with a straight face...LOL! it's especially dangerous for me to look in the mirrors there...that is an automatic chuckle.

anyone talking/chatting in the class i attend would be asked to stop immediately or even leave if they couldn't control themselves. what a disturbance that must be! SMACK 'EM! ...and then laugh.

yasar
Guest guest
<< the teacher reminds me/the class each time i do this that i lost my focus and breath..>>

maybe so, but you are likely getting more enjoyment from your practice than those stone faces around you. one day i had to pull out of practice because i had a bad headache that was getting worse with each forward bend. i decided to sit in the back of the room and watch for a while. everyone seemed so serious, so intense. no one seemed to project any feelin' good vibes at all. several have mentioned here that guruji frequently laughs and causes the students to laugh in his classes. i know the teachers i enjoy the most are those who get me to look at the practice that day in a new way and to try and enjoy it, even laugh a little. seems a little less robot-ish that way
Guest guest
yeah--hasn't anyone ever gotten stuck in garbha pindasana? if that doesn't make you laugh, then there is something Seriously Wrong.
Guest guest
Your posting made me laugh so hard my children had to come check if I was alright. The other day during 1st series with Tim Miller he sang the 12 days of Christmas, starting at 5 and going backwards during Navasana. He said we will do it from 12 this week. I can't believe people would have conversations while others were in savasana, you should smack um.
Guest guest
Thanks for the warning - I will practice Navasana now so I can last the 12 days when I'm there in a couple of weeks! Sandy

Guest guest
I bet if we all got together and took a class there would be so much laughter we'd blow off the doors. I always end up laughing in the roly-poly part of garbha pindasana, or falling over onto me bum in bhujapidasana. Better to laugh than get frustrated!
David Swenson had some simple, wise words for us at a workshop. This should be fun! If you're not having fun, you should find something else to do. I completely agree.
B
