Gyrotonics / variety / boredom

This has been a problem for me. It's usually

advised to do yoga at least 4 - 5 days a week, preferably

6. When I used to work with the Bikram series, the

prescribed practice there is every day for 2 months minimum,

then at least 2 days a week for maintenance after

that. For me, boredom does usually set in sometime in

that 1st month. I'm really trying to combat it this

time, just keeping in mind that advice, "just do the

practice, and all is coming"...

I guess your reason

for practice has something to do with your

motivation. I used to be more concerned with external

benefits, but now I'm more interested in the

emotional/mental strength that is said to come from the consistent

practice of yoga. I'm less hung up on some of the specific

aspects of asanas, as I have seen lots of variations, and

more with focusing on the breathing, bandhas, etc.

paying attention to what my body may be trying to tell

me. (and I'm trying not to have expectations about

any particular thing happening, trying to have more

of a, "lets just see what happens" attitude. hard!)

The other day, when I was feeling less than

enthusiastic about the morning's practice, I thought I'd vary

things a bit by, after doing the sun salutes, and

standing postures (and before finishing postures) instead

of the normal seated postures, I did the 2nd half of

the Bikram series, which contains some back bending

asanas, such as what is found in the 2nd series of

Ashtanga... well, it went OK, although later in the day, my

neck and shoulders were a bit sore. I thought it would

be beneficial, since I know those cobra, locust,

bow, etc, postures are very beneficial. But maybe

there's a good reason for putting them in the

intermediate, and not the primary series... For now I think

I'll just concentrate on that 1st series.

Edie
