Guest guest
There are some more differences between John's and David's Primary I have spotted so far:

- John does Chakrasana after Urdhva Dhanurasana; Swenson leaves Chakrasana out at this point of the sequence.

- There is a vinyasa between Ubhaya Padangusthasana and Urdhva Mukha Paschimattanasana in Scott's book; Swenson simply rolls back (no vinyasa).

But the biggest difference is in the Finishing Sequence:

Swenson includes Urdhva Dhanurasana and Paschimattanasana into Finishing. Scott's finishing sequence starts with Shoulder Stand, excluding back bend and forward bend. According to him, back & forward bend are transitional postures between the last pose of Primary (the bridge) and the first posture of Finishing (Sarvangasana).

In the foreword of Scott's book, written by Guruji himself, Sri K Pattabhi Jois states that Primary as shown by Scott is "...the correct method of Ashtanga Yoga".

Could someone please explain to a complete ignorant like me why everything Swenson ever produced (book, videos, tapes) never got Jois' approval?

Why are Lino's and John's Primary Series as shown in their books & video (all approved By Jois) so similar to one another, and so strikingly different from Swenson's version? Claudia?

i think the previous points that that all of these authors are correct in their method is most accurate. perhaps there was a time when the sequence was taught as it is shown in those two books. it may well have evolved since then and those two still teach it in that former sequence. fine, no big deal. it may also be that other authors, like mr swenson, teach the sequence as they see it taught now by skpj. i don't know. just seems like a whole lot of nothing to get ones tighty whities in a wedgie over. if it makes you feel better than thou to practice it the way mr scott and mr miele teach, more power to you. may your niyamas expand ever more

Guest guest
Oh, there's way too much arrogance there for him to see it as an indignity...
