Guest guest
Nitya_em's call for courtesy is highly commendable.

Even though I am a newbie in this group I am a 'net veteran'
of (almost too) many years and have seen many a discussion group
deteriorate because of the increased volume in posting.

The groups that have survived the said situation have always
found a way to either moderate or categorize the posts, so
that people can easily select the topics that are of interest
to them.

I see that the regular posters here have reacted very emotionally
against these recent proposals of topic moderation. It is very
understandable and I am not saying that people should restrict
their contributions to matters strictly to do with Astanga Yoga.

BUT, something needs to be done. I am sure that there are a lot
of people like me who don't have too much time on their hands
to spend browsing through dozens of messages that have little
relevance to them. After all, I joined this club to read about
Astanga Yoga, get useful tips, and learn how it affects people
who do it.

An Usenet newsgroup alt.fan.pratchett (Terry Pratchett - one
of the best and funniest writers still writing) uses a handy
system of [tagging] the message subjects. I borrowed parts
of their FAQ below, so that you can get the idea of how it
works. Just replace 'Terry' with 'Astanga' and there you go :-)

You can the entire tag FAQ by searching for "Ppint's FAQ"
on http://www.deja.com/usenet

---
Tagging assists visual selection of threads likely to be of greatest
interest and avoidance of threads of least interest.

[R] - Relevant - articles (other than annotations) that are
directly related to and are discussing Terry's works,
publications, theatrical productions, films and other
activities that are based upon them, including the companion
maps, art & craftwork, inasmuch as they relate to the
original works and each other.

- Irrelevant - threads whose subjects are not *directly*
related to Terry's works, publications or other "spin-offs",
nor to afp fan activity, nor to afp-the-newsgroup. Please
bear in mind that is not intended as a licence to
repeatedly introduce contentious or other subjects for
their own sake - consider whether the subject has already
been aired recently and is still of wider interest:))

[M] - Meta - These are for the discussion of issues relating
to afp itself and how it operates. Please take the time to
look at them as and when they arise - this is *your* group
after all. They are the forum for discussing changes to the
way your usenet community operates (eg how tagging is used,
FAQ issues etc), as well as activity on the newsgroup and matters
generally within the group itself which may be of concern/interest
to rs.
---

If people aren't willing to migrate to ezboard I think
such a system might be handy. Opinions?

Namaste!
