Some people have tons more deep chronic muscular

tension than others. And for some, the practice of

Ashtanga yoga may need to be modified or supplemented

greatly, at least for a while. Some useful exercises may

be neck rolls (tilting forward, tilting back,

tilting left, tilting right, turning left, turning right)

and shoulder rolls (both directions). These can be

done very slowly to get in touch with tension and

release it. It could also be useful to investigate the

Iyengar approach to yoga - hold postures longer and find

the postures you need to do most. It may be good to

look into other approaches such as Feldenkrais or

maybe get some deep tissue massage work done. Others

may have more specific info on what to do in downward

dog. Note that you may currently be unable to put your

shoulders where they should be - they may be "glued" in

place. It can take some time to get free of tension,

much longer for some than for others.
