Alan,

I guess we should count ourselves

lucky that K.P.Jois teaches in English at all, however

bad his knowledge of the language might be. Let us

never forget that barely 30 years ago, the first

Westerners who wanted to learn Ashtanga Yoga had to beg on

Jois' doorstep for the privilege of being admitted to

his lessons. And of course, if I had to count up to

10 in Sanskrit every time I do yoga, I'd make a mess

of it too, dead sure.

My English is not

nearly as 'excellent' as it might seem to you, since I

am a native German speaker indeed, but thank you for

the compliment. Blessed is who invented the

dictionaries. For some years now, I've also got used to read a

most unspiritual (money-grubbing) British publication,

"The Economist", to which I owe a not insignificant

part of my vocabulary (K.P.Jois, listen up!). David

Swenson & John Scott are respectable English teachers

too, especially since their books have not been

translated into German yet. Besides, translations are

unreliable. Subtle books on Yoga are better bought and read

in the original language: which, in most cases,

means in English.
