Guest guest
Hello!

I'm new to this club and fairly new to the ashtanga practice. I've been practicing yoga solidly for a year and about a month ago I began incorporating ashtanga into my practice.

My question is, can anyone tell me the words to the chant that is usually done before the beginning of an ashtanga class? The only name I recognize is "Pantanjali."

Any help would be much appreciated!

Namaste!
Guest guest
In English below. I've got a 1.5 meg MP3 file with it on. Im happy to email it to anyone who wants it. Umm . . .i guess I must have found it on the net but where who knows? Im sure some more enterprising net denizen will post the hindi which I have but is locked in a jpeg and I haven't got time to transcribe. however again ive got the whole thing locked up ina word doc (pC) if anyone wants it (68kB)

BEGINS

I bow to the two lotus feet of the (plurality of) Gurus which awaken insight into
the happiness of pure Being, which are the refuge, the jungle physician, which eliminate the delusion caused by the poisonous herb of Samsara (conditioned existence).

I prostrate before the sage Patanjali who has thousands of radiant, white heads (as the divine serpent, Ananta) and who has, as far as his arms, assumed the form of a man holding a conch shell (divine sound), a wheel (discus of light or infinite time) and a sword (discrimination).

om

Guest guest
This site offers a really good translation of the chant, as well as a recording you can play so as to hear just how it's pronounced (though no 2 teachers, I've noticed, chant it in exactly the same way).

http://www.yogaworkshop.com/

Guest guest
tried to post this site for the chant earlier but screwed it up somehow, it's a pretty neat site for other things too. the section on the chant shows what the proper tonal inflection should be, though it seems that each teacher has their own way of doing it.
http://www.ghita.com.au/crippled/chant.html
