Guest guest
Article on D. Life is pretty interesting. As on the video he did with Willem Da Foe, he strikes me as a rather humble, down to earth kind of guy who happens to cross dress on occasion and no doubt enjoys other flavors of flamboyance. So be it. Most interesting is his admission he prays to an 8x11 of guruji; but then, is any ishta devata more reasonable than another? Guest guest
Hey hey Sgee

Sorry youve managed to cover some bits of ignorance in me with your post. YJ presumably yoga journal - is it a US mag? Willem Dafoe - as in Platoon , Light Sleeper and that diabolical film with Madonna (umm Body of Evidence: once saw it in a Moroccan cinema with extra 'spice' edited in in teh form of mid seventies German pumping porn: cheescloth; facial hair and gynaecology all mixed up in one fearful package - boy put me off sex for hours). Ahh Light Sleeper - fantastic film (and so New York). Paul Schrader often seems to have a sort of spiritual / existential crisis in his movies. Anyway, theres an interview with that WD? Love to read it, he's a brillaint actor (yuk, that scene in ohh. . . whats that film with Nic Cage and . . . kinda of Wizard of Oz on acid with Elvis standing watch. . . ummm . . .anyway he's brilliant) who just got more brilliant.

Sorry Sgee, what does 'ishta devata' mean pls? Sounds like I really need to know and, once enlightened will drop it in conversation ad nauseaum. . .

Ta tA tat sat
Guest guest
Concerning flamboyance, don't you think it is true that someone strongly attracted to spiritualism is not going to fit the profile of the "normal" and "average." Not that I've had the good fortune to encounter really holy beings - but I have read that saints -- real saints -- are often very eccentric people. In conclusion, I have taken classes w/ D.Life and he's got to be one of the best American yoga teachers. And that video you're referring to is excellent. Guest guest
"ishta devata" means one's chosen deity, or the form of one's chosen diety. In the YJ interview, Life says he prays to a photo of KPJ.

Actually though, i was being a bit facetious here. I didn't really mean to indicate that Life considers Guruji to be God Incarnate. No doubt he sees his Guru as a gateway to contemplation of the Infinite.

BKS Iyengar said that in his younger days, he'd prostrate to a photo of Krishnamacharya 108 time a day. Guest guest
>From what little I know about him, I think D. Life is cool, even unto his teaching of other forms of yoga besides astanga. But, my social conditioning, coming as it does from a generation where nobody got tats or piercings or god forbid genderbending garb, sees the D man as a flamboyant character. Guest guest
>But, my social conditioning....

You must be a little off the beaten track. In most urban centers on both sides of the Atlantic, body ornamentation is a pretty normal thing to see. For some reason on this forum when David Life is mentioned all anybody can talk about is his “personal style”. I took a 3-day seminar with D.L. and that was the least of my impressions of him. Guest guest
defacing the body is a craze of the younger gen, not of mine.
Guest guest
I never thought of David as being in the younger generation.
