Guest guest
Question for anyone. One of the great things about ashtanga vinyasa is the heat. For me, as for many others, the heat allows a deeper movement and more comfortable movement into postures. I dont see this in the iyengar method. I dont even like to do postures without my sun salutation warm up to start mysore. Am I missing something about the Iyengar style.
Guest guest
Fiend,

I missed the heat in Iyengar methods also. The solution was a good 10 minute workout on the rowing machine before starting my Iyengar routine (there is a very good fixed routine in the Sivananda tradition)

Jim

Jim
Guest guest
I like many others, have worked seriously with Iyengar Yoga as well Ashtanga Yoga. I find what I like about Iyengar Yoga is the alignment, the way one works in the pose in a sensible way but what I don`t like about Iyengar yoga is that you are encouraged to go into extreme postitions without having warmed up first.
I have injured my hamstrings recently by doing Iyengar Yoga- simply because I wasn`t warmed up enough to go into the asana.
In Iyengar Yoga there are sun salutations as well but very few teachers use these to help the class warm up. Anyway if you did get warmed up there are so many details one has to add in every posture that one tends to cool down again.
So all in all you are right, the heat is very important ..Iyengar yoga with its principles of alignment can compliment Ashtanga Yoga very well BUT when doing Iyengar yoga remember that you aren`t properly warmed up so don`t push yourself too far. Guest guest
I also know of an extremely flexible and experience astanga yogi who, when recently attending an iyengar class, injured himself simply because he wasn't warmed up.
