Hi, everyone. I'm a little new to this yoga

thing. I joined yesterday in an effort to find some

support and knowledgeable people. I have taken up yoga

because over the last 5 years I have suffered several

unexplainable medical problems. After exhausting all avenues

and possibilities the doctors all ways resolve it to

stress. So I have changed my career from social work to

sales. This has given me less hours to work (I used to

work 16 hour days). But I was still having problems.

So I have looked to yoga as a method of relieving

stress. Any way that's my story. I started my yoga at the

gym and have bought a tape to help me do it at home.

If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it.

Hey yourself. As you probably can see already,

you have inadvertently stumbled onto a group of

people who are very intense, and who might not even be

supportive. Reading the past posts on this board might make

you feel that you know nothing about yoga and will

never learn. (It might also make you wonder whether you

want to.) Never fear. "Ashtanga yoga" as defined by

most of those here is a very specific approach that is

very, very different from anything that you are likely

to encounter in a gym in Putnam County. There is a

lot of information here if you are really interested

in that specific system, but it sounds like you are

not in a position to make that kind of choice yet.

So, here is some advice: Do lots of yoga. Do it

alone; do it in classes; go to special master classes

and clinics; read books; watch videos; do anything to

learn about it. Yoga is the real thing, and it is like

a miracle that knowledge of it has spread to the

west in the last century. Yoga can only be taught by a

teacher, or guru. Keep all your senses as open and aware

as possible and you may find one who can teach you,

and that is your guru at that time.

And, at

all times, everything is as it is supposed to be.

Forget about stress. There is nothing to be stressed

about. Learn yoga.

i started a few months ago. this has been a good

place to lurk if you can take the bantering that goes

on. i have gained some worthwhile tips, names of

books, videos, etc. i have rheumatoid arthritis and

ashtanga has given me renewed flexibility as well as some

real emotional cleansing.

there are some folks

to avoid here once in a while...and some to read

carefully. i will miss shining skull as i have for the most

part really enjoyed his attitude.

just don't

take everything you read here too seriously...i

sometimes wonder if some of the more cranky ones on the

list have ever practiced yoga at all?

LOL!

ciao,

yasar
