Guest guest
These questions are not simple.

I drink milk and eat cheese, but mostly buy them organic and free range and so am not supporting factory farming or eating large quantities of artificial hormones, antibiotics etc. (Or so I tell myself hopefully, without actually having made any effort to investigate german organic famring standards & practices)

On the other hand, if a vegan eats fruit and vegetables imported fom halfway around the world, then they are arguably violating ahimsa by (a) the environmental damage caused by transporting food that people don't actually need halfway around the world and (b) the possible social and economic harm caused to the farmers on the other side of the world by giving them cause to grow cash crops for export instead of subsistence crops for themselves.

These are not completely straightforward questions, and I wouldn't presume to criticise anybody who had given them some serious thought and come to different conclusions from mine. I myself have no desire to become an organic vegan subsistence farmer or to give up drinking the occasional capuccino, which means I am probably going to continue to violate somebody's idea of "correct" diet. "Ahimsa is impossible" - KPJ http://www.yogasite.com/pattabi%20jois.htm - although that isn't a get-out clause from making some honest attempt towards it.
