Guest guest
Yo S2,
You seem to have been instantly and miraculously cured of Borderline Personality Disorder. Perhaps you could share your treatment protocol with us? Or are you under an oath of secrecy to the brotherhood of yoga practicing pirate impersonators...

FBL
Guest guest
I definitely am a borderline-disordered personality. But if I were not, why should I bother to do astanga yoga on almost every day of the week?
Guest guest
Or maybe I should say "disordered borderline personality"? Oh damn, my borderline-disordered English...
Guest guest
"A lot of people try this kind of yoga. The ones that stick with it are either desperate or
crazy"

Thanks Alan. Danny Paradise has always been known to have a good sense of humour but this time I think he is being very serious. Anyone who has "been around" will realise the truth of what he says in this quote.
"Desperate or crazy ?"- maybe even "desperate AND crazy" more like.
If you find out which issue of YJ the quote is from it would be much appreciated. Guest guest
Hello Alan, Sorry if I am a little slow in responding to this message as it is sort of "old" now. I have just been thinking alot of what Danny Paradise meant by the quote you wrote. I did like it and am just curious what sort of meaning he had in saying it. Sometimes in reading its hard to note the tone or inflection of whats written (just look at the fighting going on here!). Also, I have done lots of thinking on your observations of the USA and found them to be very inciteful. With our "legal" society around I thought the article on traveling to India to study Yoga to be interesting. I believe BNS Iyengar said something to the effect that in the USA we are told to stop when the poses hurt but there they believe that the body is a "vessel to be baked" or something like that. I thought in America a lawsuit would follow, if we were adjusted the way it sounds like they are adjusted in India. I do think we are becoming a society of politically correct weaklings. When I was in the USMC they had a saying about in times of war the real true heroes came out and in times of peace the "Paper Pushers" took over. I sometimes wonder if that is what is meant in the bible about the "meek inheriting the earth". Now don't get me wrong, I do not advocate war. You know, all this talk of yamas/niyamas and such, I do believe in with all my heart and strive to follow, but I guess the contradiction is the other side of that, which is I would not have a problem with protecting my life or my family or friends life with any means necessary and that too seems a bit odd for a striving yogi. Anyhow, I do not really know what point I am trying to make here, thanks for bearing with me....the truth is I am really tired of reading (no names mentioned) the same old shit here of the scriptures used to defend oneself over and over and over and over and over................................ Guest guest
Hi Michael, good to hear from you.

B.N.S. Iyengar is in England this summer, I'm thinking of going. In fact, he's teaching a joint workshop with Godfrey so I really should get my finger out and book. I'll let you know how "baked" I get.

I had heard scare stories about Patthabi Jois' heavy adjustments in Mysore, and was nervous when I went to his workshop last summer with a bad knee. In fact, I found him to be amazingly able to adjust me way past my fear limit without hurting the knee at all. Also, I must say there were lots of people there with impressive practices who are obvious very dedicated ashtangis, and I certainly didn't come away with any impression that American yogis are wimps (no matter how liability-conscious their teachers might be.)
