Guest guest
I think there is a good guide on how to pronounce the Sanskrit names of the asanas in the American edition of B.K.S. Iyengar's "Light on Yoga".
Guest guest
Excellent question. Have been wishing for something like that for a long time. I don't think any of the Ashtanga books include pronunciation info. It would be cool for someone who is expert on this to post such a guide on their website.

There are a couple of ways to go about getting this info.

One way would be to get a book that has the names of the postures shown with all of the markings and then figure out each one individually using some kind of guide to Sanskrit pronunciation. Richard Freeman's site has links to lots of Sanskrit info on the web: http://www.yogaworkshop.com/links.htm
Lino Miele's book may be the only Ashtanga book that has the markings on all the names. I can't verify shining_skull's suggestion on Light on Yoga, as I have only the older (1966) edition. It does not seem to have pronunciation info but does have markings on the names. Does not have all the postures from Ashtanga though.

Another way to get this would be to get a video or two and see how the teacher says the names. Or just go to some classes. Of course whoever you are listening to may not have them all right and also you can get the wrong idea just because of someone's own accents or inflections.

There is a guide to Sanskrit pronunciation in Desikachar's Heart of Yoga.

Anyone know of other sources for this? Guest guest
Shining,

Can you be more specific, i.e. page number. I looked quickly and saw explanations of meaning but not pronunciation guides.

Thanks,

Jim
Guest guest
Another option might be an audio tape I own myself, and which is quite impressive:

"101 Yoga Flashcards and Audio Tape" by Ramanand Patel and Beatrice Briggs.

You can order it online at http://www.yoga.com/roots/yoga/store/yogatools.htm#flash .

It's still in the context of iyengar yoga though, and it does not have the names of all astanga postures. However, it gives a good idea about the pronounciation of Sanskrit names.
Guest guest
*I think* to have read somewhere that the American edition of Iyengar's "Light on Yoga" has a pronounciation guide at the end of the book. Maybe I was wrong. Sorry.

I myself have only the German edition, which does not have such a guide.

But Mira Mehta's "Yoga - The Iyengar Way" has a section that explains quite well the pronunciation of Sanskrit.
