Guest guest
I don't find ekapadarajkapotasana useful as a hip opener either - for me that one is primarily a pain in the ass - the front leg stretch seems to be mainly in the gluteus.

A good hip opener that I learned from a jivamukti teacher is to sit both legs in the e.p.r.kapotasana front leg position, i.e. one on top of the other (left ankle on right knee & vice versa) then bend forward. If you have tight hips like me that one is a beast. Hope I've described it clearly enough - if it has a name I don't know it.

But (turning purist here) the thing that has *really* worked for me is just spending a lot of time slowly working my way into, and in, the bound half lotus asanas early in the primary series; instead of just thinking "oh I don't like these, oh my knees hurt, never mind, let's just get them over with & carry on with the rest".

Have tried doing other things, e.g. long sits in baddhakonasana or the position I just described - outside of my main practice, but am not at all convinced that it had any useful effect.
