Guest guest
<<I am still trying to figure out how it looks like to drop into astavakrasana from handstand.>>

Discussion of advanced postures is the pornography of ashtanga yoga. Let us indulge for a bit!

In third series, and in the old advanced A series, there is both an ashtavakrasana A, in which you approach the posture from handstand or from a three-point headstand, and an ashtavakrasana B, in which you jump from down dog directly into the posture.

The drop from handstand into ashta A is not so bad, provided you can first jump reliably into handstand, which is tough to get. To get a feel for it you might jump from down dog as in ashta B. I find that easier and I think others will, too. Of course you should first get comfortable with ashtavakrasana A using an Iynegar approach.

Alternatively, to avoid practicing postures out of sequence and being labeled a yoga criminal, you could just acquire Swenson's 2nd/3rd series tape, or his advanced A/B series. In the latter tape he and his friends show various levels of vinyasic flourish in the arm balances.

In my experience no single one of these arm balances is a killer, provided you are comfortable in various types of headstands. Doing all ten of them in sequence however, even without the handstand options, really tests one's ability to balance efficiently and thus conserve strength. I have tried and failed -- for now -- to climb that particular wall.

Reforming Criminal,
Homer

I've seen it all over and I know the question has been raised on this board before, but either we never got an answer or I just don't remember.

Homer
