Maintaining a personal practice

Hello, I was wondering if anyone here has any

advice on maintaining a personal practice by oneself. I

have been practicing Ashtanga off and on for almost 3

years and for the last year I have been living in the

countryside where there are no yoga schools of any kind.

Continuing to practice all by myself has been challenging

and I sometimes miss practice for up to a week at a

time when my body and mind resist the practice. (It is

not feasible for me to go to Mysore at this

time).<br><br>Any advice? Thanks!

homunculus<br>i had to look it up but your name

means you are app. as tall as a ranunculus.<br><br>you

probably wanted a serious answer. For a regular practice

one option would be to get a girlfriend you practice

with who is an Ashtangi (a vinyassi), a New Yorker,

and preferably Jewish. You'll never miss

practice.<br><br>Unless of course you're a Passive-aggressive.

Find others to practice with, or if you can teach, teach.<br><br>That's the

secret to maintaining a personal practice for most people -- practice with

others.

Ah, so the Japanese good friend of the German

calling himself "SS" thinks it the height of hilarity to

recommend procuring a Jewish girlfriend in New York to any

wishing to establish a consistent yoga practice. Noted.

Funkybadlady: so simple yet so hard, eh? You're

right, of course.<br><br>Tshamoya: great idea,

unfortunately there are no Jewish NY yoginis around where I

live, and even if there were, I'm no Godfrey

Devereux.<br><br>Screwgee: unfortunately that's the problem, there is no one

around where I am to practice with. It is maintaining a

consistent practice alone that is so challenging, but also

so worth it.<br><br>Thank you all for your

responses.

I was kind of in a hurry but the truth is there

is not a solution other than changing your own

perspective about doing yoga. I usually don't talk about my

self, Funkybadlady doesn't like to give away personal

information because she is so funky and so bad, but she says

it is OK for me to tell you that I have been

practicing alone according to the Ashtanga calendar -

everyday but Saturday, moon days and lady holidays for

over two years. Of course I go to class whenever I can

when I can, sometomes for two weeks, sometimes for

only one. There is no onther way but to just practice

and not make a big fuss about it. Of course I learned

from teachers and only add on poses with a teacher. I

don't bother with yoga classes that are not with my

handful of trusted American students of Pattabhi

Jois.<br><br>FBL

Of course, if they are not American. that's OK

too. I only said that because at the moment I live in

America. <br><br>And American's probably are fatter than

most other countries but I have to say that a lot of

recent immigrant types I see around also happen to be

rather zoftig. Maybe it's a lack of education or just an

economic thing. McDonald's is cheap, after all. GOOD food

in America is very expensive.<br><br>FBL

i must say...i'm about 30 pounds over what the

AMA tells me that for my height i should be...

HOWEVER, my body fat percentage is 15%, which is the

lowest that a menstruating female should

be.<br><br>lol,<br><br>lauren

Please relay my gratitude to the funky bad one

for allowing you to share, your advice is good and I

admire your discipline. Like you say, it's important to

keep my perspective and not psych myself out.

<br><br>Someone on ezboard referenced this quote by David Swenson

which I like:<br><br>"I have never had a practice which

I regretted. I have never finished practicing and

thought; "Oh, I wish I hadn’t done that." On the other

hand there have been days in which I didn’t practice

and wished I had."

Just wanted to thank those who have posted on

this thread. I am having a tough time making classes

or practicing with others and when I am left to my

own devices, my tapas quickly dissipates. It helps me

to know that others find it challenging/difficult to

maintain the discipline of daily personal practice and yet

are able to do it anyway. <br>Namaste, K
