Guest guest
Happy Fourth of July to any and all who observe it as a holiday that celebrates independance.
Say Alan, having never travled much, I'm as uninformed as they come. How is July 4th perceived in Great Britain?
Guest guest
> How is July 4th perceived in Great Britain?

It isn't really, any more than any other foreign national holiday is. Are you suggesting we ought to celebrate getting rid of you lot? ;-)

The one time I was in the States on 4th July, I was all psyched up to go up on Twin Peaks in San Francisco with the folks I was staying with and get amazing fireworks photos. It was foggy.

My big "cultural levelling" experience in this respect was Christmas in India, a day or two after I arrived on my first visit. A completely normal day like any other, apart from an unusually large number of locals out on the beach (presumably the substantial Christian minority in Kerala). Guest guest
Hey Alan - Just read in the "Hobbies" section on your profile that you are "attempting to do ardha baddha padma paschimattanasana properly".

Some time ago popstar Madonna demonstrated just that posture on one of her visits to Germany in Thomas Gottschalk's quiz show "Wetten dass..?" on the ZDF channel. Did you see it?

Madonna mastered the asana gracefully, as if it were nothing to her. Thomas Gottschalk, obviously envious: "Ha, that looks easy! I'm sure I can do that myself." Of course, he wasn't able to get the posture even approximately right. Gottschalk, who is very tall, after several attempts ending in failure, with a side glance to Madonna: "Well, I guess that with short legs it's also much easier to do!" That clearly miffed her. "My legs ARE NOT SHORT!!", Madonna replied evidently piqued.

But in fact she is quite short. (Which doesn't necessarily mean that only short-legged people are able to do ardha baddha padma paschimattanasana properly, of course.) Guest guest
Oops. Sorry. The posture Madonna demonstrated was actually ardha baddha padmottanhasana (which to me is more difficult to master than ardha baddha paschimattanasana). Anyway, I will be probably off to Hamburg for the next couple of days, so that you won't see my crap posted here. Goodbye.
Guest guest
Can do the left side now - still several centimetres off binding on the right.

Madonna appears to have a pretty solid second series practice, judging by the short practice sequence in her ** truly, truly awful ** movie last year in which she played a yoga teacher. So yes, I would expect her to be able to do a basic primary series asana pretty easily.

But appearing on ZDF? How is her German then? Guest guest
Madonna can't speak German - although she has been in Germany several times already, as well as being a regular guest in Thomas Gottschalk's TV show. Mercifully, Thomas' English is fluent. However, though she doesn't appear to be much interested in learning foreign languages - despite her origins, she can't even speak Italian - Madonna is an astonishing Astanga-Yoga practitioner. She also has some excellent teachers: John Scott, Kimberly Flynn and Noah Williams, among others.

Guest guest
<< what calls you to Hamburg? Work or fun?? >>

Fun, fun, fun!

Seriously, I have been invited by some person I know there, and I will travel to Hamburg tomorrow morning. I have been up there only once, it's a beautiful town - for German standards at least. I will be back next week on Monday late, so until Tuesday this board will be rid of me: enjoy! Guest guest
uh, bobbithang, do you actually practice ashtanga yoga?
Guest guest
actually...i'm the same height as Madonna (5'4) and really it's just as hard for us short people to do it as taller people. Proportionally, it works out. I mean, I think it really only gets easier if your arms are really long, or your upper torso is long. Otherwise, proportionally short people are about the same as tall people. )

Lauren
Guest guest
Yes..I am new to Asthanga(about 4 months). If you understood much about my life situation you would know about why I cannot attend formal classes at this time. Why you ask?

Robin M.
