Guest guest
Hi Homer,

ahhh yes...the 'insertion point hamstring injury'...yes it's still with me...ever present...some good days, some bad.... I too continue to 'work through' it...I have a teacher training with David Swenson in early August and then it is my intent to get seriously proactive in terms of getting to the root of the problem...I have tried some physio (mostly just strengthening exercises and back stretching (the physiotherapist suggested I work on stretching my back in order to stretch the 'dural sheath' (I think that was it) to ease up on the hamstring...didn't really help although I did get some nice lenghtening in my lower back.... Also accupuncture (sometimes seemed to help in the short term) accupressure (caused nasty inflammation which i think WORSENED the situation...)

I thought maybe I would go the ultrasound / injection (?) route....is that what you did ? What is your doctor's official diagnosis ?

What have you tried ? (or are you planning to try?) I'll try anything at this point !

Thanks for asking by the way, its nice to commiserate (sp?) with you...

(hamstring battle weary) Warriorgirl
Guest guest
What have I tried? Mostly backing off a bit, over the past year or so, from the forward bends that bother the hamstring.

The doctor said that I can't really do harm by going back to full bending, even in the dreaded kurmasana; in fact I should do gradually in order to re-lengthen the injured area. He gave me an anti-inflammatory medicine and said come back in a month.

There are more aggressive treatments, but he said that come with a reasonably high reinjury rate, especially for someone like a yogi who is playing the edge.

I forget the technical name of the insertion points: apparently there are four on each leg.

Anyway I've tried full tittihbasana in second series last night, and a nearly straight-legged kurmasana today, and nothing exploded. We'll see how it goes.

It's possible to get an MRI to be 100% sure of the problem: have you considered doing this?

Peace and Good,
Homer
Guest guest
The only thing 100% sure about the MRI is that you'll be out 100% of xxx amount of currency to get it--
If your reasonably pain free-- you should be able to forward bend- but if the pain increases or you have decreased range of motion you should stop.
Namaste
Guest guest
i hope this is not attracting bad luck, and it is useful.

There is life free of any awareness of this past injury...it took a few years for me.

First you have to continue practicing (in a gentle and conscious way for that area) right away. Yeah aaaaaah! Then after the worst is over (6 months you have to stil continue practicing , with awareness and consciousness and be very careful of cold movements (not warmed up). With regular practice in a few years when others mention it, it will come to mind you also haD that challenge. It may sting in that are for a few years every few months, but even that goes away. Lance Armstrong cured his cancer and went on to win the TDFrance 2 times in a row and is heading that way again as we speak wearing the yellow jersey after the 13(?)th stage. We can do this!
