Guest guest
Interesting story, that would explain why several asanas have animal names. Picture this: As the ancient sadhu would jump up into an asana the others would mumble in sanskrit: "Man, you look just like a horses face." and thus Vatayasana was born... Guest guest
It is a long shot that a sadhu looked at the pose you mention and said "Man, you look just like a horse's face," for two reasons. One-the pose looks nothing like a horse's face. Two- the asana is incorrectly translated in Lino's book. Vatayana means that through which air passes (vata=air),like a window.
And yes, the pose is also incorrectly translated in BKS's Light on Yoga - and he should have known better!
Vatayanasana regulates the internal air.

its been a while, m.p. Guest guest
Damn there goes my punchline. Thanks for the info, though. Doing a quick Google search on the name reveals a world of confusion out there. Check this out for something completely different:

http://www.raoproductions.org/yogapic.htm

And look for Vatayanasana, Wind Relieving Exercise :-)

Btw, it still looks more like a horses face than Gomukhasana looks like a cows face... or is that a misnomer too? Maybe in this posture your upper body is Krishna-in-the-cart and your knees are the heads of the cows. And you're facing 'em.

Peace and Good,
Homer
