Guest guest
15 minutes will get you nothing but greasy! Do you ever go to the beach? Somehow the heat works well with the oil and allows it to penetrate deeper into the joints. I used to rub it into my knees, elbows, wrists and ankles and left it there for hours. Could my skin breath? Of course not, but my focus was better padmasana and hanging out in handstands. Manju is a believer and made me one. Could I have gone through the series without it? I'll never know because I used the stuff on a regular basis. Coconut oil may be a little more palatable.

Yours in yoga,
Guest guest
Thanks, I do live near the beach. Will the oil do much for helping to open hips in padmasana, or are the hip joints too deep for the oil to have an effect there?
Guest guest
I never tried to oil my hips, seems like it would have to work sooo deep. If you're at the beach, just get in the sand and grease your knees. After some solar energy is absorbed you should be able to work your heels further across your thighs opening your hips... The best hip opener IMO is sitting on the floor as much as you can in baddha konasana, use a small pillow under your tail. Another is to just squat on the floor w/ feet shoulder width or a little wider. Alternate between the two during the evening. After you're comfortable sitting this way for hours, the hips will probably allow most postures with comfort.

Yours in yoga,

He recommended using warm linen compresses or going to the sauna. But, he also advised against sweating too much 'cause then your system can push the oil out with all the sweat.

Also, have you heard about this one? I believe it's an Ayurvedic advice: One should not eat cooling foods like watermelon or cucumber after the bath or taking a cold shower or a cold swim during the day after a castor oil bath.

Someone asked about the hips. Well, I spent a long time massaging the oil into my hips and pelvis 'cause there lies the root of all my problems. And I think it did some good in relaxing the chronic tension in those muscles. At least I could just slip into a painless padmasana effortlessly afterwards. Not common for me without warming up first.
