Guest guest
missy revisits her recent post for clarification:

"It is a long shot that a sadhu looked at the pose you mention and said "Man, you look just like a horse's face," for two reasons. One-the pose looks nothing like a horse's face. Two- the asana is incorrectly translated in Lino's book. Vatayana means that through which air passes (vata=air),like a window.
And yes, the pose is also incorrectly translated in BKS's Light on Yoga - and he should have known better!
Vatayanasana regulates the internal air."

I can name one very serious ashtanga yoga practitioner who calls this pose window, or air balancing pose - Sri K. Pattabhi Jois! Where else would missy p. have found her information? She certainly wouldn't have posted for the first time in 6 months, if not to correct a long held mistake, and so spread some good ashtanga learning. When asked the meaning of vatayana, Guruji pointed to the nearby window and quoted the meaning in sanskrit from Amara Kosha, the sanskrit thesaurus, a text he memorized in full while a young teen in his first year at the Maharaja's Sanskrit College. He said further that when one practises this pose, pressing the heel down, internal air is rising correctly. He had a very good laugh when asked if the pose meant horse. When he spoke of internal air, he did not mean gas, rather prana.
m.p. agrees that it is pretty silly to shop around different yoga sites or books for seemingly related info. It is just confusing for those that visit this site wishing to gain some knowledge.
So why do people incorrectly refer to this as a horse pose? Probably because they looked no further than the bad translation in BKS's book and just repeated the mistake ad infinitum. Actually this kind of thing happens too often in yoga education in the West. Everyone just keeps regurgitating the same old sources (Georg Feuerstein in not the final expert, nor David Swenson nor Lino Miele). Study under a true master and be guided to the truth.
fondly, your pal, m.p.
