Guest guest
"Many long time ashtanga practitioners develop a graceful quality and line in their practice like Richard Freeman who is a rare and authentic yogi of the highest caliber"

Actually, i believe Richard Freeman studied Iyengar yoga and was a certified Iyengar teacher,
which would probably make him an example of how the study of alignment can enhance your subsequent ashtanga practice.

But some people have the gift of doing only ashtanga yoga yet with that internal understanding of the pose. Looking at a video of second series with guruji leading richard , tim , chuck, etc at yogaworks i would say tim miller, to me, is an excellent example of that. Guest guest
Thank you for your reply! You answered my original "question of teaching". I didn't think I was tossing off misleading hearsay. I don't know how far back you read into my messages. The method you say is used by Guruji is exactly the method that sounds appropriate to me, I just don't know of a slow method like that being taught in my area which is why I asked "what is the correct method". I originally started this message so that someone like yourself could give me the real picture of how Ashtanga is taught to a beginner.

As for allignment, I most certainly don't think that a teacher guiding their student to keep their hips square in a pose is any form of trying to creat beauty. I feel the opposite. The warrior 3 pose may look beautiful if I just bend forward. But when I am taught that the focus should be keeping my hips square to the ground & pivoting from my hips, I may only lean over 6 inches instead of the entire way & I guarentee nobody would want to take my picture to post it as an example of the warrior 3 pose. The last thing my teachers reach for is a bunch of students in pretty poses. Guest guest
Having practiced less than a year, this beginner is eager to study with the source in NYC and has registered to do so....my only reservations are rumors that corrections can be STRONG and women get extra physical attention. Any advice Missy?
Guest guest
Missy Pinky-
A while back you said that you could damage your nervous system by mixing Ashtanga and Iyengar yoga. Could you please elaborate on this?

vt
