Guest guest
Alignment uber alles is an idea springing from the Iyengar tradition. This tradition puts an acute emphasis on alignment over the other factors of hatha yoga practice -- breathing, bhandas, drishti (gaze), etc.

Since a great many people are introduced to yoga practice via the Iyengar way, in classes, books, or by reading Yoga Journal, they get the idea that precise postural alignment is the foremost consideration to correct yoga practice.

Astanga vinyasa also values postural alignment, but doesn't overemphasize this aspect of the practice over proper breathing, bhandhas, drishtih, etc.

IMO, if one doesn't have a teacher, a good way to learn the basics of alignment and astanga vinyasa practice is to study Richard Freeman's video on the 1st series. Freeman does a superb job of presenting the fundamentals of postural alignment in yoga, in the context of astanga practice. This video tells you 98% of all you'll ever need to know about alignment, IMO.
