Guest guest
earths age,
I never could get my foot position in chaturanga, updog and downdog to agree until I learned to do sun salutations the standard ashtanga method, with jumping back, and forward, and no dragging or wimping out in the transitions. The distance that you jump back then can be the measure for all the other poses in the sequence, and it works out pretty easily.
Since there is no such thing as a "lunge" in the regular ashtanga sun salutation, I'm guessing that you are talking about one of several easier variations that are often taught to newer students or as a warmup, where you are encouraged to move as wide as possible into a lunge, with one foot forward and the other back. If you do that, it is likely that you will wind up wider than what would be consistent with your best dog pose, and then you just have to adjust. (Or, you can not go so far back in the lunge.) As you practice more the dog pose tends to open up and it gets easier to go from one thing to another.
